Thank you for posing this very very important question, we’re waiting the replies from the experts. Also, what are the benefits of getting vaccine in ‘inactive’ chronic HBV if the term is correct as I think I read Dr. @ThomasTu saying there’s no inactive HBV if I am correct.
I guess @Anon2023 is talking HPV (which is different from HBV), Isn’t it?

Yes, the HPV vaccine is completely different from HBV. It is safe to take it, and it will not cause any sort of reactivation.
If you are asking whether inactive carriers can take the HBV vaccine, keep in mind that if you have detectable surface antigen, the vaccine will have no effect. I guess you could get it if you need documentation that you’ve had the vaccine for some administrative purposes. It won’t do any harm. If you’ve cleared surface antigen and don’t have detectable antibodies, there is more debate around whether or not the HBV vaccine can help patients like this to start making antibodies. Supposedly it does have this effect for some people.

Hi @Dan yes, that is correct! I meant HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccine, not the Hepatitis B one.

I recall hearing about some things (for example, like some strong antibiotics) that should be avoided bc they could potentially reactivate hep B, so I was curious about the HPV vaccine

It should be safe. I took my HPV vaccine a few months ago, and I have not experienced any side effects. The HPV vaccine does not contain the live virus particles or materials, so it’s much more tolerable. I hope this helps. Bansah1

I have just heard that with chronic hepatitis B we should be careful of some stuff (for example I once heard we should avoid a specific antibiotic, which I forgot the name of, because it can reactivate hepatitis b in us). so i was not sure if the HPV vaccine would be OK for us or not. It’s good to know you recently got yours!

Agree with the others, HPV vaccine is safe to take even if you have hep B! As far as I know, there is no additional risk of reactivation due to this.

@ThomasTu thank you for the input! I wanted to be safe and see if others had gotten it despite having Hep B - I’ve heard there are certain medications (such as some antibiotics) that could potentially reactivate Hep B in us so I was curious and wanted to be cautious.

HI again @Bansah1 curious to know, did you get all doses of the HPV vaccine or just the 1st so far?
No worries at all. I only received one shot. The pharmacist didn’t say anything about needing extra shots. I think the current administration changed the recommendation the requirements from 2 to 1 shot, if I remember correctly. You might want to ask your pharmacist about this.

Oh really that’s interesting, are you in the USA? My wife got her first shot several weeks ago but she was told it will be a series (3 total). I was under the impression that only young kids/teens got the shot that was a single dose and adults got the 3 dose series.
Yes, I am in the US. My pharmacist didn’t say anything after my shot. I received one shot and that was it. I have been back to the pharmacy numerous times afterwards and nobody has said anything about it. I know they changed the recommendation, but I am not sure exactly what it does among children vs adults.

I found out that it’s also age specific, some people get 2 shots and others 3. I will ask my pharmacist the next time I visit the store about it.

I had 2 series of the HPV vaccine and had no issues. I had the original one (4 strains) when I was a preteen, around the time it came out, and then I had a second series as an adult with the newer 9-strain version because my GYN said I could. Both times, it was 3 shots per series.

Yes that is what I have heard - that young teens get 2 and then older teens/adults get 3! However, I do believe outside of the US some countries do one shot so maybe some pharmacies in the USA have started following that as well. And that is a good idea, I would recommend maybe following up with your pharmacist just to be sure!

My wife recently started her 3 dose HPV series , but I was unsure if I would be able to given my positive Hep B status, I was afraid of the risk of reactivation but it’s good to know others who have Hep B have gotten it with no issues. @et5656 Are you Hep b positive? your doctor never told you any concerns about potential reactivation from receiving the HPV vaccine as a Hep B patient?
