I found out I have chronic hepatitis B three weeks ago. My viral load was 119 million so my doctor started me on TDF right away. My liver tests were normal.
I have taken TDF for ten days so far. I received a three month supply. I will go back after those three months for new tests and he said we will check the viral load again, then decide on the next steps. He also said I might need long term treatment. I live in Rwanda, so TDF is the only option for now.
I am 25, female, 62 kg. I want to know how treatment looks for adults who got this infection later in life. I also want to know what long term life looks like with this diagnosis. My doctor said people still live long and stable lives with this infection, but I feel scared. I want to hear from others who have gone through this.
I also want to ask about side effects. During the first days I had strong headaches. Those stopped but now I feel mild muscle pain when I move. I want to know if others had the same experience and if this settles with time.
Hello @Beautiful-standard ! Welcome to the community! I have been living with hepatitis B likely since birth, though I was diagnosed 17 years ago. I’m also on TDF, and I’ve personally had no side effects from it. I agree with your doctor that you can live a full and healthy life with hepatitis B. I lead an active lifestyle, with running, cycling, skiing, hiking, etc. Stay positive, and know that you’re doing the right thing by starting treatment. While it sucks to be diagnosed with a chronic disease, at least with hepatitis B, there are actionable things you can do to improve your quality of life and prevent spreading it to others.
I was diagnosed At the age of 20 years old. In those days, nothing was really known about it. I’ve been on medication since 2016. I am thankful for the medication as others have said this disease it’s not the worst.

I am living and active. A full and active life. I had three healthy children and am now in my retirement years 65 this year.
