Surgery and hep B

Hello,

In October I’ll be having a jaw surgery. I also have hepatitis B and since April last year I’m on Tenofovir (currently undetectable). Is there something I should know before surgery considering my liver health? Is anesthesia neutral or harmful to the liver? Or painkillers im the aftercare?

Has anyone of you had any surgery while being treated for hepatitis? Is this alone a contraindication for having an operation?

Regards

Hi @Arb,
You definitely should not have any issues. However, let the doctors know that you have hepatitis B and what medications you are taking (both prescribed and over the counter). I had ankle surgery about a year and a half ago, and I had no issues or limitations. I was prescribed some painkillers, but I was on those for about 2 days. They made me feel like crap and were not controlling my pain. The doctor also asked me to pick up some aspirin, and that was extremely helpful. I was also on that for some days. I took it only when needed.

It is important to let them know your status and any medication you are taking. It will help them in your care plan. I hope this help., Bansah1

For me, the virus is also undetectable. I’ve had several surgeries. I haven’t had any problems with anesthesia or anything like that. As for pain relief, I just can’t take NSAIDs, but there are plenty of alternatives.

Good luck with the surgery! It will be fine.
