This community is super helpful and supportive for all HBV patients, so I decided to ask you for a suggestion.
I’m having a mild pain in my mouth and because in a month I’ll have a jaw surgery, I decided to seek advice from an otolaryngologist how to get completely healthy before the operation. She didn’t diagnose any bactrrial or viral infection but said that I have a very narrowed nasal septum which, together with dry air and mouth breathing at night, cause inflammation of the mucous membranes inside my mouth. She prescribed a steroidBudesonide. It’s a nasal spray. (It’s also used by patients with allergies).
In the leaflet I can read that patients with impaired liver functions should exercise caution when using this spray because “budesonide concentration may increase”.
I forgot to tell her thay I have hepatitis…
I’m supposed to take three doses a day in total for two weeks (plus one week additionally just before the surgery as a prevention). Each dose is 64 micrograms, so 64 μg × 2 nostrils × 2 doses for each × twice a day = 512 micrograms per day in total. Do you think such amounts of this medicament can be harmful to the liver?
Steroids suppresses your autoimmunity in turn can cause HepB flare ups, and liver damage As long as it’s not prolonged use of it and at low dosage you should be ok but you should inform your doctor of your HepB so he aware and perhaps prescribe an non-steriod alternative to the steroid based medication you were prescribed.
Nasal sprays do not cross very efficiently into the bloodstream, so the risk of affecting your hepatitis B is quite low. This has been touched on by a previous thread:
