Hepatitis B in Nigeria: discussion thread

No symptoms, I’m still the same as I was when the viral load was undetectable.

Don’t be scared you might still have acute infection

I understand what you’re going through but you need to stay calm you still have the chance of clearing the virus

Hi @Janefrancis,
Please with your viral load being in the millions, I will recommend you see a provider and discuss possible starting treatment to decrease your viral load. This high viral load puts you at risk of damaging your liver and exposing others if there is contact with your blood or body fluids.

Please, see a provider that treats HBV as soon as you are able to. Bansah1

Thank you, I have an appointment with the doctor on Monday, I will be there.
I’m really scared right now. The last time I checked, my viral load was undetectable and the HBeAg was negative, I don’t know how I got here. I’m really worried.

How accessible are medications for it?

It is hard to say since I don’t live in Nigeria. It should be part of the discussion with the doctor about treatment and what antivirals are readily accessible to you so you don’t miss doses. Thanks, Bansah1

Thanks for the updates, @Adedeji_Joseph, and please keep in touch with how you go with the doctor!

Thomas

Hi everyone,
I trust you are doing great, I want to appreciate you for your concerns last week, I was able to visit the hospital on Monday as I was told to, I also got the results of the tests I did, that day, after consulting with the doctors, I was placed on TAF 25mg.

I can’t help but question the validity of my results, why being that the first time I checked my viral load in 2022, the result came out that I had undetectable viral load and that the HbeAg which is responsible for replication of the virus was negative at the time, but on checking it now and finding out that my viral load had skyrocketed, it all just doesn’t feel correct to me.
Attached are the results of the test I did.

  1. The first two pages show the previous test I did in 2022
  2. The next four pages show my current result.
  3. The last page shows the medication that was prescribed to me.

Kindly, look through my case and advice on what to do, I am thinking of taking another test somewhere else to double check my status before commencing the medications.

Thanks for your continuous support.
Regards.

Hi @Adedeji_Joseph,
I empathize with you, and I get your frustration. But 3 years is enough time for things to change, hence the importance of remaining in care even if you do not require treatment at the moment. Things can change without any warning, as in this case. That is HBV, a very complex disease requiring vigilance and continued monitoring.

It is great that you got a clean ultrasound result for your liver. Start your antivirals, and it will help you reduce your viral load numbers back to undetectable levels. It is doable, as many of us can confirm. You might never understand why, what, and how this happened, but that’s sometimes how viruses work. They can change without any warning, and the person may feel or experience nothing. Adhere to your treatment and care, and let’s get this higher viral load lowered. Take it one day at a time. Hi @Adedeji_Joseph,

Just to add onto @Bansah1’s great comments, the reactivation of viral replication in HBeAg-negative phase is well-documented and expected in a subset of patients given our knowledge of the course of a chronic infection.

You are doing a great job in continuing monitoring, finding out about these changes early and getting treatment, so that you can prevent any ongoing liver disease that accompanies HBeAg-negative virus reactivation.

Hope this helps
Thomas

Hi Augustine. You can visit Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). I’m sure you can be assisted there.

Thank you @ThomasTu and @Bansah1 for your timely feedback, I appreciate your concerns and support, thank you so much.

After the test I did in June, I resolved to carry out another test in another lab to validate the result of the test that I did in June of this year. I did another HBV DNA test this month, August, and the result I got is more outrageous than the one I got in June, according to the result, my viral load is about 5 times (current reading: 122Million) the one I got in June which is alarming. Either way, I have began taking my medication, one dose per day, and I hope and pray it works for me.

But I would like to know if what I am experiencing now has happened before (I mean the replication of the virus in that amount within two months), or the labs I am using are questionable. And if this is true, what could have been the cause of this? What do I need to work on, start or stop to stop this flare?

Attached is an image of the result I got this month.

Thanks & warm regards.

I got the one I am using now at FMC Abeokuta, which is the hospital I have been using from inception.

I’d suggest you go to a hospital, hopefully, it will be available there.

It’s great to hear from you. Yes, this can happen when viral replication is not controlled. This definitely might not be a lab error. Uncontrolled viral replication is very dangerous for the liver as it does increase inflammation which then causes damage to the liver. It’s good that you have started treatment to get control of this. It will also provide some liver protection. It will take a couple of months or even a year to see your viral load reach undetectable level. Be patient and let the antiviral do it’s job.

Keep up with your treatment and care. Let’s keep in touch. Thank you, Bansah1.
