HBV and Lyme disease

Hello, I’m being treated for hepatitis B (Tenofovir disoproxil), but I was recently diagnosed with Lyme disease. I haven’t seen a tick or a rash, but I’ve had suspicious joint pain for a few days. ELISA tests showed an active infection (IgG negative, IgM positive, 24 AU/ml). I’m still waiting for the Westerblot results. I also had a staphylococcus in my nose and a streptococcus in my throat. I had a sore throat. Other than that, I have no other symptoms, no headaches or a fever. (I’m wondering if this throat infection activated previously dormant Lyme disease - this is just my theory). In any case, I’m wondering how to proceed with treatment if I also have liver disease. I have to take the antibiotic doxycycline for three weeks. Will this medication harm my liver? How to proceed? I can’t ask my hepatologist at the moment. I got prescription from my GP but I didn’t ask.

Hello @Arb

I’m not a health professional. Lived experience.

My doctor proscribed me Doxycycline last week! He knows I have HepB and am on Entercavir. So hopefully, because it’s a short course, everything should be ok.

Sorry you’ve been going through this sickness period. It’s not pleasant being sick.

How are your vitamin and mineral intake?

I take lots of vitamin c tablets when I’m sick. It really does improve the immune system. I’m sicker for a shorter amount of time.

My experience only.

hi

I am a health professional.

There is no signficant increased risk of taking doxycyline with your hepatitis B meds. please follow the advise of your drs re Rx for lymes.

Hi @Arb,
I agree with @aliceulee and @Caraline. I will encourage you to share this information with any provider you see, especially that you have HBV and all the medicines you take, prescribed and over the counter. This is crucial in your care. This will prevent you from taking any medication that may interact with another or worsen your condition.

I hope you get some relief soon from the effects of Lyme disease. Best, Bansah1
