HBV and Insomnia

Hello,

Does HBV cause Insomnia? Are they related? I have been insomnia for a while and I don’t like the idea of taking pills due to HBV( inactive carrier.) . I would like to know if anyone experience the same issue as me and how you cope it? Thanks in advance!

Hi @Kty,

I have the worst insomnia. I have to take strong prescription meds in order to sleep at all. If I don’t take the meds I won’t ever sleep. I know that cirrhosis can cause bad insomnia, so I equated the insomnia to cirrhosis. However, I have had insomnia for decades before I was diagnosed with cirrhosis, although it got worse with cirrhosis. So I was curious about your question and looked it up and found that it is possibly an issue for people with HBV and not just cirrhosis. Keep in mind that there are many other factors that could cause or contribute to insomnia.

Here is a short article about it: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26633859/

As always, I am just sharing my personal experience or what I have gleaned. The experts input and verification is always warranted.

Hi @kty,

Sorry to hear about your insomnia, it’s terrible not to be able to sleep.

There has been a more recent (and larger) study than the one that @PuallyHBV mentioned and it did not see any significant difference between people with and without HBV (https://doi.org/10.3389/fmed.2022.951762). I think if there really is an effect, it might be weak. It might be worth checking out your thyroid hormone levels though, according to this study (Depression and Insomnia Are Closely Associated with Thyroid Hormone Levels in Chronic Hepatitis B - PubMed).
