Hap b functional approvals and phases

HBV treatment. As of May 2026, the quest for a functional cure has moved from “hopeful research” into the active regulatory approval phase.
The specific date you likely heard about—October 2026—is the official deadline for the FDA to decide on the first major functional cure candidate.
1. The Frontrunner: GSK’s Bepirovirsen
The biggest news right now is that GSK officially submitted its New Drug Application (NDA) for bepirovirsen in April 2026.
Priority Review Status: The U.S. FDA has granted it “Priority Review,” which fast-tracks the process.
The Decision Date: The FDA is expected to announce its decision by October 26, 2026.
Stage: It has completed Phase 3 trials (B-Well 1 and B-Well 2), which showed that a significant number of patients achieved a functional cure—meaning they cleared the HBsAg surface antigen and maintained control of the virus after stopping treatment.
2. Other Key Players in the Pipeline
While GSK is the closest to the finish line, other “combination” therapies are in the final stretch:
Vir Biotechnology (VIR-2218 + VIR-3434): Currently in advanced Phase 2b/3 trials. They are seeing very high rates of surface antigen loss by combining an siRNA (which stops the virus) with a potent antibody.
Janssen/Arrowhead (JNJ-3989): Also in the late stages of testing. Their focus is on “silencing” the viral DNA to allow the immune system to recover.
3. What Happens in October 2026?
If the FDA approves bepirovirsen on its October deadline:
Manufacturing & Distribution: GSK has already signed major deals (including a massive launch deal in China just this month) to ensure the drug can be produced and shipped quickly.
Market Availability: While it might not be in every local pharmacy on November 1st, it will likely be available through specialists and major hospitals by late 2026 or early 2027.

This is promising news.

I hope they have found the perfect combination to inactivate the virus and activate the immune system in a way that benefits everyone.

But until they publish the results and what these medications are truly capable of, I will remain waiting with hope.
