I have chronic hepatitis B, and I’m living in the US. I’m currently on TDF (generic), but I would prefer to be on TAF, due to the better safety profile on kidneys and bones. I get my kidney function checked regularly, and it has been fine every time, but I have not had my bone density tested. My insurance will unfortunately only pay for TAF for people who have chronic kidney disease or osteoporosis. I can’t afford to pay the brand-name prices. I have heard that it may be available as a generic in 2032 or 2033. The thing that I’m curious about is that I have seen some websites from other countries that seem to suggest that it’s available as a generic outside of the US. I’m not sure if that’s trustworthy information. Is it typical for other countries to have generic drugs become available before they’re available in the US?
Also, is it recommended to have my bone density tested routinely while I’m on TDF?
You should ask your doctor for a DEXA scan . To find what if you have osteoporosis or osteopenia. I have been on viread and the only problem I have is a slight osteopenia. As long as you are not underweight , very likely you will be fine with Viread .
Hi @et5656,
First, not everyone on TDF is going to have bone and kidney issues. This happens among a small portion of patients. There are patients who have been on TDF for over a decade with no issues. The important thing is continued monitoring while on TDF. It is crucial to remain under care and work with your doctor.
Yes, there is a generic version of TAF but it is not available in the US. However, Entecavir is another great option for patients. Best, Bansah1
Is a kidney polyp but normal kindney test values a plausible argument with insurance to switch to TAF?
I would. I was one of the ‘rare’ people who developed bone loss and kidney infection.
I was switched immediately this was picked up. But it was only picked up from kidney infection.
Who knows how much bone loss I lost. Am now on treat for bone loss-a six monthly injection.
The research I did said it was mostly slim build people who reacted to TDF.
Or switch if you can.
I’m not a doctor this is my lived experience.
Update: I ended up getting a DEXA scan. Here in the US, you can go to this place called Body Spec and have it done for $60. I’ve been there before (prior to starting TDF), and my bone density now is exactly the same as last time.
Would doctor accept the results from Body Spec? She ordered DEXA for me in her hospital system but it’s scheduled out to Feb 2026
