Doctor Referral in US for Vemlidy

Long story short, I have Aetna insurance. Starting 1/1/2026, Vemlidy is no longer convered. My doctor’s office refused to send the exception letter or appeal. I’m considering switching to a new doctor.

If you know any doctors in US who is willing to submit an expection letter for Vemlidy, please let me know or just message me. I’m in Texas but I’m totatly fine with telehealth.

Really appreciated for any help.

Hi,

I’m in TX as well and had the same issue (insurance no longer covering Vemlidy). I asked my Gastro to prescribe me Entecavir .5 as a replacement. After 3-4 months, my VL went from undetectable to detectable. I then asked him to write an exception letter to the insurance and attached the before and after test results. Insurance approved this but only for 1 year.. I’ll have to go through this again in Oct (with a new dr.) something is going on with the Gastros in my area.. they’re dropping like flies. Hope that helps. Lmk if you have any questions

HI all,

I am on the Hepatitis B Foundation Scientific and Medical Advisory Board. The HBF is fighting as hard as we can to get TAF added back to the Aetna formulary. Aetna is pushing back because it would cost them a small amount of money, but the HBF is not giving up and we’ve won this fight in prior years. Hopefully we will this year too.

John.

Thank you for sharing the information! Yes, the other route is that my doctor asked me to try Entecavir and TDF for couple months before an exception can be given as Aetna required on the deniel letter. It makes me feel like guinea pig to take the risk and experienting on my own body for non medical reasons.

Thanks so much for sharing this insights! Glad to hear HBF is working on it. Really appreciated you and HBF’s hard work. It’s just so rediculous that Aetna do this again and again, for pateints that need this medication for years and even life time.
