We have a football competition coming up, I feel like playing as I miss the sport but I’m concerned about possible transmission of the virus… At the moment I plan to just support from the stands but I wish I can play myself. What do you think guys? (Presently not on treatment for context)
Hi @sam12,
Having HBV should not be a problem here. Cover any cuts if any and go enjoy some football. Best, Bansah1
Sam, don’t let anything or anyone stop you from going after your dreams. Talk to your doctor and proceed from there. There’s no reason for you to not follow your dreams as long as you’re following your doctor’s advice. Do not let the conditions of your health issue stop you from pursuing your dream
Dear @sam12,
Great question. I’m an Australian, so when I think of football I think of this:
Even in this sport (which I think we can say is a bit more contact-based compared to soccer and so holds more potential for blood-to-blood exchange), there is no detectable increased risk of transmission (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.5694/j.1326-5377.1995.tb139908.x). Indeed, there is what’s called the blood rule in AFL, which means you do get sent off if you have a bleeding wound, which does help control for transmission.
Hope this helps,
Thomas

Thank you for your responses guys @Bansah1 @Kiowa6530 @ThomasTu
I can’t explain where the fear is and what the fear is about, I just feel it’s better I don’t put myself in such scenarios so I don’t start to overthink everything and hurt my mental health in the process…
Hi @sam12,
We hear you. Please don’t let the HBV diagnosis and fear be a barrier preventing you from doing and enjoying what you love. We all have to be careful, but we must live our lives and enjoy it as best as we can. Best, Bansah1
Hi @sam12,
Fear is very much an emotional response and does not necessarily have to be rational (this doesn’t make it any less real or valid though).
I have found over time, it isn’t always the studies and the evidence that cuts through this fear, but more about seeing other people doing it: having real examples seems to convince us on a much deeper level that it’s safe.
