ask for opinions and suggestions My baby is currently only 3 months old, I started taking medication from a doctor when I was 28 weeks pregnant. When my baby was born, I received the vaccine and now I am still continuing the medication for 3 months. Since I gave birth, I have not gone to my doctor but I bought the medication myself at closest pharmacy until now, at the last control my doctor advised me to take medication for life… my baby is very active and his weight is very good!! I’m worried if TDF is exposed to my baby for too long?? please advise TDF in my country is very easy to get, and very affordable and simpler,
Hi @Helmy,
I understand that some patients end their treatment a few months after delivering. Each individual case is going to be different. There shouldn’t be any effect of TDF on your child and I doubt there will be any harm for your continuation of treatment. Remain patient if you can and other experts will share their advice soon. Best, Bansah1
Dear @Helmy,
TDF exposure to your baby through breast feeding has been shown to be extremely low and cannot even be detected in the blood of infants to mothers taking TDF (Plasma and Breast Milk Pharmacokinetics of Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate in Nursing Mother with Chronic Hepatitis B-Infant Pairs - PMC and https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1111/apt.17102).
Thus, according to the current scientific understanding of how the drug is metabolised, continuation of your TDF treatment is likely to have negligible effects on your baby.
Hope this helps,
Thomas
