I’m planning to be in Prep (Yetzugo), while I am undetectable with HBV. Anyone from the forum who’s in Prep? Can you please share your experience, and does your viral load and liver enzymes (ALT/ASG) flare up? Any side effects you’ve encountered?
I’m not on PrEP, so I can’t answer questions about side effects, but one thing to be aware of is that if you’re currently taking Viread or Vemlidy to maintain your undetectable HBV viral load, those contain the same drug as Truvada and Descovy, respectively. If you plan to take oral PrEP, you would stop your HBV antivirals, and take the oral PrEP instead. The long-acting injectable PrEP does not have action against HBV, so with that one, you would just add the PrEP injections to your medication routine.
@et5656 I missed to mentioned, I am on entecavir for over 10 years and that keeps me undetectable . I will talk to my doctor if switching to Vemlidy is an option he will recommend.
Thank you very much.
Hi @Kr2025,
Similar to @et5656, I have not been on PrEP. However, I agree that because some of the hepatitis B medications contain the same drug ingredients as those used for PrEP, I will recommend that you have a conversation with your hepatologist/whoever you see for your hepatitis B care about this. They will be able to guide you on this matter. Best, and keep us posted.
I have also not been on prep, but do note that the new WHO guidelines have said that if you need treatment and cannot access Hep-B specific antivirals, Prep can be used instead.
