Tenofovir + Aciclovir (against herpes) - any experience?

Hello,
In 2 weeks I’ll have a surgery. In my household there’s a person with active cold sores. He’s quite careless, he picks his sores and then touches things without washing hands, he even made me tea which I drunk without knowing about his illness.
Before the surgery it’s very dangerous to have herpes. It can lead to herpes encephalitis - a serious condition that leaves a person disabled or even in coma.

For this reason, I consulted a dermatologist and he gave me a prescription for Aciclovir. I’m supposed to take it 10 days before the surgery and 5 days thereafter (400 mg x 2 times a day). I know there’s an interaction between Aciclovir and Tenofovir. Has anyone had an experience with taking these two medications at once? My doctor is on leave :frowning:

Hi @Arb ,

It might be worth having a chat with your pharmacist if you are unable to get a hold of your doctor. @PharmacyExperts here may also be able to provide guidance.

Hi @ Arb

Your concerning about the use of acyclovir prophylaxis for herpes infection . Acyclovir is nucleoside analogue that inhibit DNA polymerase enzyme of herpes which is DNA virus. I think the side effects of acyclovir we should concern is renal toxicity , so if you use TDF which has renal side effects then the combination of this two drugs may have higher risk . However, you use acyclovir low doses for prophylaxis that I think may have lesser side effects but should monitor for renal toxicity. I hope this may help you.
