I am so glad you mentioned genotypes!!! This is one of my main interest in the lab! I do fully agree, as you said, we do not know a lot and it is extremely under-researched. I would say that it is sometime difficult to entangle population genetic, environmental factors and viral genetic, as the genotype distribution is still quite mostly restricted to specific geographic areas hence it is sometime difficult to study. We do hope that by sequencing more HBV genomes internationally we will be able to build a dataset that will allow to investigate these questions more robustly - stay tuned!
