Reinfection is possible?

Hello everyone

Thank you for this wonderful forum and support that is extended to the whole community.

I have a question to the experts here:

If someone achieves a functional cure, with Anti -HBs positive above 10, can he get re infected again in the future if he was re-exposed to the HBV virus?

Hi @Exit336,
If the person has developed strong antibodies against HBV, then the answer is no. At the same time, someone who has achieved a functional cure can have their HBV reactivated. That can happen.

That is my thought as a fellow patient. Best, Bansah1

I agree with @Bansah1 that it’s possible for HBV to reactivate after achieving a functional cure, however, I’m not sure if being exposed to the virus again would increase the chances of reactivation. Maybe someone else can weigh in? That’s actually a very good question.

Hi @Exit336,

Great question. You are generally considered immune with an anti-HBs of more than 10, so you would be protected against a second exposure.
