My Hepatitis B Story

Hi everyone!

Sometime in December 2023, I had a nail appointment just like any other day. While the nail technician was filing my nails, I got cut. Since it was a public salon, I knew I needed to request PEP from my primary health centre. As part of their normal procedure, they conducted HIV, HBV and HCV tests. When my results came back, I was told that I had acute Hepatitis B. They were short on medication at the health centre, which meant I had to get the medication from a private pharmacy. I tried to get it but, unfortunately, I couldn’t.

In my head, I thought, “Well, it’s not HIV, so I’m cleared. I just need to keep taking my PEP.” I honestly had no idea what my Hepatitis B diagnosis meant. The doctor reached out to me personally and told me that I needed to get the medication somehow. I tried my best to obtain it, but I still couldn’t, and eventually, I gave up.

I went online and briefly read about Hepatitis B. Most of what I saw said that Hepatitis B can clear naturally, especially in healthy adults, and that maintaining a healthy lifestyle, avoiding alcohol and staying hydrated were important. I thought my immune system was strong enough to fight it off, so I stopped looking into it. Fast-forward almost three years later without follow ups. I started noticing that I was getting fatigued very easily, along with some other symptoms, so I went to a different hospital. I told them that I had tested positive for Hepatitis B in 2023 and needed to be tested again. The doctor was shocked that I had taken my previous diagnosis so lightly.

Long story short, my new test came back positive. My liver function tests were okay, but I was referred to another hospital to see a gastroenterologist. I’m based in Nigeria, so accessing a specialist can be quite difficult. I’ve now been waiting for over two months and still haven’t been able to start any treatment or medication.

I’m honestly very worried and scared. I eventually broke the news to my siblings, and they’ve been incredibly supportive. I’ve been celibate since 2024, so I’m not currently worried about sexual transmission to a partner.

My biggest fear, however, is still the nail technician at the salon. I feel so guilty because I worry that I may have unknowingly put other people at risk, especially people who may have used the same nail file after me. At the time, I genuinely didn’t understand how serious Hepatitis B could be. I’ve struggled to forgive myself since I found out that I am still positive.

My loved ones are now vaccinated because, before I understood how Hepatitis B is transmitted, I started isolating myself from them out of fear of infecting them. I know now that Hepatitis B isn’t spread through ordinary casual contact, but I was terrified of putting the people I love at risk.

I’m currently trying to understand what my diagnosis means, what tests I should be asking for, and whether I need treatment. My lab result shows that my current viral load is 234.

I’d also be happy to share my laboratory results if that’s allowed. Thank you for reading.

Hi @Chubi,
Welcome to the community, and thanks for sharing your experience with us all. Vaccination among salon workers is strongly recommended, and in some countries, it is mandated to get vaccinated to avoid exposure. I hope that is the same for workers in Nigeria and that this worker is vaccinated. I understand you feel guilty about the situation, which is a normal reaction. Let’s hope nothing happened to the worker, and they wore gloves, which will provide them with some protection. We can educate others about this so they can protect themselves.

Your viral load of 234 is very low, making any transmission less likely. Caution should still be taken. You must stay in care even if you do not currently require treatment. The disease can change without any warning.

Best, and keep us posted. Bansah1

Welcome @Chubi

First of all, your viral load is very low, as your liver is okay, you are in a good stage of chronic HBV.

Secondly, did you make sure the infection was before the nail cut? Have you ever screened for HBsAg before?.

I tell you this because I just discovered I am chronic HBV carrier as I never ever did the test!. I was suspicious about my contamination with the same symptoms you had, however all my thinking was wrong, because I am likely a carrier from my childhood.

The vast majority of adults clear the virus by their own, you know, the confirmed information says 90% of people affected by HBV get self immunity (antibodies).

Thank you for replying. I’m not very sure it is mandatory over here, but I hope they are all vaccinated because the nail tech doesn’t wear gloves.

Thank you for replying. I’m sure it was before the cut, because I checked my records that I had access to and found that I tested negative for hepatitis B in 2021.

Welcome @Chubi

Common issue among HBV patients-fear of passing on virus. You must be a kind person. Not everyone is like that. Some even have sex knowing they have the virus.

I lived for years, fearing I would pass HBV on to others. By hugging, sharing spoons, cups etc. I did not want to take any chance at all.

I got the virus in 1980. Not much information was around. I thought being a virus it would go away so, didn’t take it seriously.

Fast forward 20 years and the internet-misinformation feed my anxiety.
But I was able to gain good information too. Like seeing a doctor, having 6 monthly blood tests and ultrasounds.

Now Im 66 years old. On treatment, one tablet a day. Am proactive with my health. The fear still rises when my blood is exposed, cuts etc.. But I remind myself my DNA is non detectable, other person needs a wound for my blood to enter, lots of my blood.

I’ve been married, had three children and now have three grandchildren.
I kiss them, give them raspberries (blow kisses on neck)

I have only shared my diagnoses with my siblings and mother. They were not worried at all. I suggested my mother get vaccinated, she refused.
