Hello, has anyone experienced persistent joint pain after stopping Tenofovir (Viread)? I was on the medication for 17 years and stopped two years ago. About six months after stopping, my right wrist began hurting. This has continued for 1.5 years. More recently, my left wrist started hurting (6 months ago) and my right ankle (2 months ago).
I’ve had X-rays and blood work done to check for autoimmune diseases and arthritis, but everything came back normal. I’ve read that this might be related to discontinuing the medication after so many years. Has anyone else dealt with something similar?
Hi @Steve1,
I am sorry to hear about your situation. I know you mentioned doing X-rays and blood work, but have you done any bone density tests? I will probably do that and see what the results are. Weirdly, you never experienced this for 15 years until 2 years ago. It is hard to tell, but I will do a bone density test since it is not arthritis either. I hope you can find some answers to this soon. Best, and keep us posted on how things go.

Thanks for sharing your story. I was wondering what the reason for stopping your viread was?
I think there can be multiple reasons why wrists and ankles hurt, ranging from muscular, joint, bone, neurological, or even just changes in sitting/walking pattern. It is difficult for anyone over the internet to provide a definitive answer for you and you would definitely get better answers from someone who can do test and physically examine you.
