Can we feel fibrosis or cirrhosis from the outside?

Hi all,

Over the past few days, when I touch the area around my liver it feels squishy or spongy. It’s important to mention that I had surgery on my right lung six days ago for a pneumothorax, which was followed by chest tube insertion. The chest tube was removed three days ago. It was after this that I noticed the strange feeling under my right lung described above. The doctors say this is some sort of tissue damage resulting from the operation and/or the chest tube and it should improve with time. But because I have hepatitis B, I’m worried of course that the squishy/spongy feeling might be fibroris or cirrhosis or some other problem associated with the hepatitis. So, what do you all think? Is this more than likely some sort of tissue damage or fluid retention after the operation or could it be related to the hepatitis? Is it even possible for fibrosis or cirrhosis to be felt from the outside. I’ve never heard that it could. Bear in mind, I only noticed it after the chest tube was removed three days ago.

Dear @Barry,

Sorry to hear about your experiences and hope you recover soon.

Regarding your question about squishyness, I would agree with your doctor: it is very difficult to understand your liver health just from feeling from the outside. It is much more likely to be due to your recent surgical experience.

Thomas

Thanks, Thomas. The strange thing is I had a left-sided pneumothorax 18 months ago and didn’t experience this, but I suppose every surgery is different.

Yes it may be different and the clearance of fluid may be different on different sides given the positioning of the organs.
