Any correlation between A1c and HCC?

Any correlation between A1c and HCC?

Hi @Ccheng8346,
It is not conclusive. Some studies suggest a correlation, while others do not. However, I will say HBV is the primary cause of HCC, and having uncontrolled blood sugar can increase the risk. It is always beneficial to avoid or prevent other problems that will increase our HCC risk and burden the liver. That is my take on this, and I hope it helps. Bansah1

I agree with @Bansah1’s assessment, uncontrolled HbA1c is associated with increased risk of liver cancer, but normalising it (with either therapy and/or diet) has been linked with decreased likelihood of cancer.

Thanks for the info . I got HCC 2-1/2 yrs ago ( stage 2) and I observed that if I gained to a weight of 160 lbs I had cirrhosis in 2008(which I am able to completely healed with no trace ) then in 2023 my weight was back to 160 lbs and I had covid . Wonder if it’s the excess weight and or covid that cause the HCC to manifest . Now my Hepatologist told me to lower my A1c from 6.2 to 5.6 using Metformin and to lose weight .

Hi @Ccheng8346,

This is not my realm of expertise, but my understanding is that uncontrolled diabetes can lead to greater susceptibilities to severe outcomes and infections.
